Two timelapses I took whilst on a boat trip on Sjómannadagur (Fisherman’s Day) 2013-05-03 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Soundtrack is my hurdy gurdy and some ambient sounds.
Sound effects CC licensed from freesound.org by inchadney, juskiddink, IEDLabs and Eelke — thanks!
New recording: You Can’t Measure Chaos With A Yardstick on #gurdy
It just occurred to me that I’ve had my 2nd gen Vio #gurdy built and playing for a couple of months but I’ve never posted a photo. Here you go:
Just did a bit of tweaking to my #gurdy and it’s performing better than it has for weeks! The weather today must suit it perfectly — it’s all nice and crisp. Might have to go and play in the park after lunch.
Off to do some busking on Austurvöllur
Hurdy #gurdy players: save the rosin you were applying to the foot of the chien for the chien string slot, but be aware that this trick won’t cure a badly shaped slot.
sophiedennis wow, that thing’s seen some serious repair work, judging by all those cleats! Related but not nearly as shiny:
Thinking of marking up my hurdy gurdies as schema.org MedicalDevices, with “partial deafness” as an adverseOutcome, and “growing a beard” as a seriousAdverseOutcome.
bruce lawson cool, I don’t play much #dulcimer any more (mainly #gurdy) but would be nice to get it out again! I’ll drop you an email with some lyric ideas I had earlier :)
Turns out the closest instrument to the #gurdy trompette is not the snare drum as I previously thought, but the dot matrix printer (9:30 in):
For all his smugness and #gurdy misrepresentation, I’m actually really impressed with Howard Goodall’s conclusion to the Story of Music. In particular the closing segment, where he satisfyingly sums up the history of #music in about four sentences.
Most of the series was moderately interesting historical info, but concluding by linking the advent of the Play button to Bach’s notation style is quite profound.
Erin Richie thanks for the recommendation, I’ll give it a go! RE strange choice in music: try one of my favourite experimental #gurdy pieces out:
Buying a Hurdy Gurdy — Simon Wascher’s personal criteria for #gurdy buying. #bookmark #music
@andycayenne @samsweeny123 right at this very moment :) Just drilled and glued all the keys for the two maple 7 string sopranos I’m working on at the mo. If you're interested, drop me an email: barnaby@waterpigs.co.uk
Got a lot of #gurdy turning done today. Result: two knobs, four strap buttons and two collars ready for touching up and use.
Spent a productive morning at the workshop making #gurdy keys (these keyboards are much bulkier than my previous one and should be more substantial and satisfying to play as a result), then toddled off to Dartington to be a stage hand for Devon Baroque w/ Robin Andrews. Now working on #taproot music module, might have a go with Glenn Jones’ microformatshiv.com later.
Playing Bach pieces with Robin Andrews of #buzz for our upcoming gigs (16th February and 3rd March). Some of his pieces work surprisingly well on the gurdy, against a drone!
