It's only when you put an expensive instrument on a wheels trolley and drag it around that you realise just how rubbish the pavements are around here :(
iOS automatically parses shipping tracking numbers, in a similar way to phone numbers. I can't find any documentation about this. Anyone else noticed it? #apple
A tip for #wacom#tablet owners: If the pen 'click' stops working but the cursor still moves and the buttons still work, try taking the nib out (needlenose pliers), blowing in the hole, tapping on the table and putting the nib back in. Fixed mine! #diy#fix
Anyone recommend a nice little, simple, easily available single/dual channel audio amplifier IC? One that's nice and simple, only requires a simple supply and a few external components? #electronics#audio
Looking at my #piwik realtime analytics, I see lots of people arriving at my website from the keyword 'ecard'. The reason is obvious, but I can't help thinking: what the hell is my tiny, niche ecard system doing popping up at number 13 on google results?!
My cards feature drawings of cartoon underwater pigs playing traditional musical instruments… Is this really in high demand?
When I was in Year 8, I thought they made us study "West Side Story" as some form of refined musical torture. Now, I realise that actually it's to enable younger brothers to apply said musical torture to their older sibling :(
After going flashless both willingly on my computer and forcibly on my iPad, I am amused at the range of messages I get instead of flash content. The very best sites (of which there are all too few) actually display fallback content. Most sites tell me to install flash, some don't even mention flash and tell me to turn on JavaScript (it is on!), but the worst of the bunch assume that I do have it installed, and tell me I need to upgrade to a higher version! An arrogant assumption, IMO. #flash#webdesign
The band in this video are Show of Hands — from Devon, UK. As well as playing trad music, they write songs (often to do with current affairs) in a trad/folk/rock/un classifiable style. And they have a fairly unique approach to piracy, as you will have heard if you watch the video.
They encourage their fans to copy their CDs. They're also highly supportive of fans taping their concerts and posting them on YouTube. In fact, they posted a link to this video and the others from that concert on their blog!
They do this because they know that the real money is in live performances. A copied cd is extra free publicity for them, and peer marketing is far more effective than traditional advertising — so much so that facebook have made a business out of it. And a taped concert can only ever give a small taste of what it's really like to be at a live concert.
In summary: if piracy is such a big problem to artists, bands and producers, it's because they cannot adapt, and are too myopic/greedy to usenet it for what it is — in the words of Steve knightely, "it's not theft or piracy, it's generosity (and bloody good free marketing for me)".
