  6. Has anyone published research into the of URLs? Specifically interested in how people understand, relate to and interact with URLs. Hav found some talks and blog posts but not much actual data.

    @acegiak that’s hilarious — OTTOMH, h-review p-rating is assumed to be between 0 and 5 as a fallback if no best/worst are given (and even if just best is given, 0 could be assumed to be “worst”). So you could totally publish something like:

    @thorgnyr content syndicated to silos is subject to their terms as usual, but you choose what you syndicate — e.g. for a photo you could just syndicate the name/caption and a link back to the original (same with articles or longer notes and replies, like this one)

  11. Broken your mac by removing the execute permissions on /bin/bash, or otherwise need to get shell access to fix something? (Say, for example, you were foolishly trying to patch shellshock). Don’t worry! It’s concerningly easy.

    1. Reboot your mac holding down Cmd+R
    2. Go Utilites → Terminal
    3. You’re currently in a recovery partition. cd /Volumes/Macintosh HD/bin
    4. Do whatever you need to do to fix your machine, e.g. chmod a+x bash
    5. Restart, and everything should be fine.

  12. Practice Notes 2014-09-25

    By chance, I have access to a piano in my apartment for the first time… ever, actually. Trying to work through sight-reading some of J.S. Bach’s two-part inventions (score, warning: PDF). Inventio 4 in D minor is a favourite, and I can get through either part on its own without too much trouble, or both together VERY slowly.

    Also put simple chords to De Montford and played along with a rather excellent video by Starymonetti, who I met half of in Vienna this summer:

    Also: explained the inner workings of the hurdy gurdies’ mysterious buzzing sound to my roommate. It’s not actually effectively explained anywhere on the web as far as I can tell, so if you’re curious:

    One (or more) of the strings rest on bridges which are not adhered to the instrument but rather sit in a slot and can pivot. A string (the “tirant” en Français) applies force to the non-vibrating part of the string, pulling the pivoting bridge down firmly against the soundboard. The amount of tension on the tirant sets the threshold of energy with which the string must be vibrating in order to pivot the bridge, at which point a slip-stick cycle starts to happen, repeatedly pivoting the bridge before it slips back, hammering against the soundboard.

    @elfpavlik HTTP POST urlencoded bodies are supported by every web application framework ever. For everyone to add support for not only a separate vocabulary but a completely different content type is a huge amount of (probably unnecessary) work. What benefits does it bring? Is there existing client software which would immediately work with micropub resource providers if this change was made?
